Subjects of declaration in Germany.

Employees. File a tax return if they have additional income, changed employers, are in multiple tax brackets, or want a tax refund.


Self-employed and freelancers are required to file a tax return at all times: income, expenses, EÜR, and, if applicable, VAT.


Entrepreneurs (Gewerbe)

Declaration is mandatory:

• Einkommensteuer

• Gewerbesteuer (if applicable)

• Umsatzsteuer (if not Kleinunternehmer)


Pensioners apply if their income exceeds the non-taxable minimum or if they have additional sources of income.


Spouses. Filing jointly or separately is optional. Filing jointly often provides tax benefits.


Recipients of income from abroad. Salaries, pensions, rent, and investments are subject to declaration, taking into account double taxation agreements.


Investors. Interest, dividends, and cryptocurrency income must be declared, especially if the tax was not fully withheld or a refund is possible.


Recipients of social benefits (Bürgergeld, Wohngeld, etc.), if they have additional income.


Persons receiving income from rental property.


Students and persons with Minijobs - subject to tax withholding and the right to a refund.


Persons with multiple employers or parallel employment.


Important: a tax return may be mandatory or beneficial, depending on the income structure.


! A tax return in Germany is an important tool for tax refunds.


Even if you are not required to file it, it is often financially beneficial.
