Preferential treatment for Ukrainian cars extended until 30/09/2024

The Federal Ministry of Digital Technology and Transport and the federal states have agreed to extend the procedure for exempting Ukrainian cars from the registration requirement for another six months. In fact, the regulation expires at the end of March.

Normally, cars must be registered in Germany no later than one year after crossing the border. Currently, there is an exception for Ukrainian cars: under certain conditions, they can continue to drive with Ukrainian license plates, but only until March 31, 2024. However, from April 1, 2024, these cars would have to be re-registered.

At the moment, as far as can be ascertained, Brandenburg is the first federal state to inform, through a representative of the Ministry of Infrastructure in Potsdam, that the exemption is valid up to and including September 30, 2024, meaning that Ukrainian refugees still do not need to register their cars in Germany. To get the temporary exemption, they must provide valid registration documents, appropriate car insurance and a certificate of positive safety inspection.

I follow this issue almost daily. Just a few days ago, a spokeswoman for the Brandenburg ministry said that there is currently no reason to extend the exemption procedure.

It is therefore all the more gratifying that the federal and state governments have agreed to extend the exemption.

It remains to be seen whether all other federal states will now make the corresponding notifications no later than March 31, 2024, thus confirming the nationwide validity of the exemption.
